Minutes of the MICE Steering Group Meeting on July
19, 2002
Present: A. Blondel, G. Catanesi, R. Edgecock, S. Geer, H. Haseroth, D.
Kaplan, V. Palladino, Y. Torun, M. Zisman
Excused Y. Kuno
(G. Catanesi was invited re: software kick-off week, and V. Palladino
re: fund hunt mission)
-
0. Review of steering group and technical team membership
-
Steering group membership: I. Ivaniouchenkov is added as the project engineer.
Y. Torun will be invited as webmaster/secretary (and has agreed to generating
minutes to be archived on the web and made public following review by the
steering group)
-
Technical group conveners:
-
Concept development and simulation will be split into two
-
Concept development: K. Hanke standing in for A. Lombardi, R. Palmer. This
includes cooling optics and general configuration issues
-
Experiment simulations: M. G. Catanesi, Y. Torun. Includes simulation,
reconstruction and general software issues
-
Absorbers: M. A. Cummings, S. Ishimoto -- no change
-
RF cavities and power supplies: D. Li has replaced R. Rimmer, H. Haseroth
should really replace R. Garoby for now, but we really need a RAL person
(D. Findlay?)
-
Magnet systems: M. Green, J. M. Rey -- no change
-
Detectors: A. Bross, V. Palladino -- no change
-
Beamline: P. Drumm only
-
RF radiation: E. McKigney, J. Norem -- no change
-
Engineering integration: E. Black, I. Ivaniouchenkov. This is a new working
group on technical specifications, service needs, safety issues and installation.
-
1. Dates for
-
Steering group meetings: will continue in the phone conference format
-
August 12, 2002 (Monday), 2pm GMT
-
September 6, 2002 (Friday), 2pm GMT
-
October 7, 2002 (Monday), 2pm GMT
-
Collaboration board meeting: October 25, 2002, 7:30am California time.
Will set up video link if necessary. The collaboration board should include
a representative from each collaborating institute
-
Video conferences:
-
August 16, 2002 (Friday), 8pm GMT
-
September 12, 2002 (Thursday), 8pm GMT
-
October 11, 2002 (Monday), 8pm GMT
-
MICE software workshop: tentatively August 5-10, 2002 at CERN. Goals are
to discuss/set up the software infrastructure, draw up an explicit workplan
with task assignments leading to the proposal
-
2. Agenda of collaboration meeting in Berkeley
-
M. Zisman will supply a detailed version to the steering group for comment
and an abridged version to be made available on the web to the technical
team leaders and the collaboration for comment
-
Joint MUCOOL/MICE dinner Wednesday night, collaboration board meeting Friday
morning before/during breakfast
-
M. Zisman asked everyone to give him an estimate of the number of people
from their institutions/geographical area that would be attending the upcoming
meetings at Berkeley in October so he can start negotiating with hotels
-
3. Status of Fund Hunt Missions
-
D. Kaplan and S. Geer will meet with Fermilab directorate next week to
formulate a strategy for funding requests in the US
-
R. Edgecock expects to get reasonable funding in the UK in the next fiscal
year (which starts April 2003)
-
V. Palladino will start hunting in September in Italy
-
H. Haseroth mentioned the recent decision by the German scientific agency
(that I can neither spell nor pronounce) to recommend TESLA to the government.
The impact of this for neutrino factory R&D funding in Europe and elsewhere
is not clear
-
4. Other items mentioned during the discussion
-
Magnets: M. Green will organize a get-together to come up with timeline
and cost estimates. Oxford will do a cost estimate for cooling channel
coils, V. Palladino will look into getting an Italian estimate for the
diagnostic solenoids
-
Beam/host: A. Blondel was asked to present a proposal to PSI, they may
be involved in other aspects of the experiment in addition to supplying
beamline hardware even if they won't be hosting it. They also need to know
if we want the beam solenoid by December, otherwise they need to get rid
of it. Disposal is a problem, so is handling at RAL due to radioactivity.
PSI will do further measurements to understand which parts are hot, radiation
levels will affect handling cost
