Minutes of MUG Meeting on 26th February 2003 ---------------------------------------------- In attendance: Alain Blondel, Rob Edgecock, Helmut Haseroth, Vittorio Palladino, Jaap Panman, Ken Peach, Paolo Strolin Apologies: John Ellis, Enrique Fernandez, Michel Spiro (0) Membership of MUG: Michel Spiro has been nominated Director of IN2P3 and has asked to be replaced. MUG offered it's congratulations and will endeavour to find a replacement. (suggested replacement: Jacques Bouchez, Saclay) Jaap Panman has joined MUG as the CERN EP representative. Alain will also invite Manfred Lindner to join as a German representative. (1) Chair of MUG: Alain was unanimously endorsed as chair for a further two years. (N.D.L.R. Bad luck, Alain!) (2) ECFA report: Alain submitted to ECFA in November a report on the work of the ECFA-supported study groups towards a European Neutrino Factory Complex. This was very well received and we were approved for another two years. However, ECFA would like to see the renewed organisational structure for approval, i.e. the chair and membership of MUG and the working group leaders. ECFA would also like to know what our strategy for Design Study proposals to FP6 is and there was a lot of discussion of this. Currently, it is envisaged that there will be two DS bids: Neutrino Factory (including Superbeams) and Beta-beams, with probably some associated TPW bids. Concerning the NF design study, Ken Peach said that he would be keen to lead this, with RAL as the host site and the UK playing a full role. At the moment, however, the timing is a delicate issue for two reasons: (1) the UK needs to digest MICE and (2) PPARC has the linear collider as it's highest priority for accelerator R&D. The profile of funding in the UK for the study will be clearer in a couple of months. In the mean time, Ken will work with Helmut and Rob to define a roadmap and envisage collaboration with other laboratories, which will be essential. RECFA wants to hear our plans at a meeting around 28th and 29th March, when most of us will be at a MICE meeting. Alain proposed sending them a written report instead and asking them if they really needed an oral presentation. (3) Next meeting: 3rd April at 16:00 GMT (17:00 CERN time) by phone.
