B E A M R E Q U E S T A T T H E P S E A S T- H A L L ====================== Together with your beam request for the PS East Hall beams or the SPSbeams, additional informations on your experiment or test beam activity should be given. The additional information is of particular importance for new experiments or test beam users who were not using PS East Hall or SPS beams before. If unsure on some items or don't know yet, please contact the SPS/PS Coordinator. Please read the guidelines below and consider the relevant items in your beam request. TEST BEAM ACTIVITY AND YOUR BEAM REQUEST ============================================================= NAME of the test beam activity MICE-TPG PURPOSE of the test beam activity detector/electronics R&D Test of TPC read-out with GEMs for MICE (International Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment) The aim is to determine the pad response function (resolution) and efficiency of a GEM read-out system of a TPC for various gas mixtures. This will be carried out in the East Hall making use of the HARP TPC solenoid, field cage and gas system. The readout plane will be replaced by a set of GEMs and an hexaboard read-out. RESPONSIBLE PERSONS: Alain Blondel DPNC University of Geneva Spokesperson for the MICE experiment. CERN 75827, 164058 Alain.Blondel@cern.ch CONTACT PERSON AT CERN Emilio Radicioni, INFN Bari project leader and contact person for the MICE TPG tests. CERN 72338 Emilio.radicioni@cern.ch REQUESTED BEAM TIME 4 weeks in september 2003 IF YOUR REQUEST EXCEEDS 14 DAYS/YEAR AT THE PS OR 7 DAYS/YEAR AT THE SPS: Has your beam request already been submitted/recommended/approved to/by a committee? NO FOR A BEAM TEST THAT IS NOT RELATED TO ANY CERN EXPERIMENT/PROJECT ------------------------------------------------------------------- This test is related to the MICE project. A letter of Intent was submitted in November 2001 to the Rutherford Appleton LAboratory (UK) and reviewed positively in March 2002, with recommendation to submit a proposal end 2002. The TPC with GEM read-out is one of the detector options for MICE. Is your test related to an APPROVED experiment or R&D-project of another laboratory in a CERN member/observer/non-member state, or is it an individual test? What are your requirements in terms of manpower/material from CERN? BEAM REQUIREMENTS T9 beam line. PARTICLE TYPE, MOMENTUM, POLARITY, INTENSITY, BEAM SIZE muons of typically 500 MeV to a few GeV. 10^2 particles/spill Beam Size of about 10-20 cm diameter. These beam cracteristics are not critical polarity does not matter. TIME CONSTRAINTS =================== Preferred time end of summer, e.g. month of september. It is possible that earlier use of the beam will be possible, but a cosmic trigger will be foreseen. EQUIPMENT AND INSTALLATION ============================ TYPE, SIZE AND WEIGHT OF DETECTOR a skech of the MICE-TPG test set up and its location in the East-Hall are appended. TPC with Gems is a light tracking detector. There will be a diffuser of 4 X0 to blow up the beam. The test Will require HARP TPC magnet operating, high voltage on the field cage and three racks of electronics. The availability of this equipment has been verified with the HARP collaboration and the HARP technical coordinator. The proposnents are members of the HARP collaboration, and own a large fraction of the electronics that will be used. The HARP magnet will be dismantled AFTER the test is finished, as part of the HARP dismantling plan. SAFETY HAZARDS ================= FLAMMABLE/POISONOUS GASES A variety of gases will be used: Ar C=2, Ar CH4, He CH4, He-IsoC4H10. Will use the gas system, field cage and containment vessel of the HARP TPC. The HARP TPC laser would be desirable.
